Ragan Lake

Candidate for Livingston County Prosecutor

Ragan brings years of experience to the role of Livingston County of Prosecutor.  Ragan is currently an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office assigned to its Child Abuse Unit.  As a member of the Child Abuse Unit, Ragan handles felony cases of child abuse, and other felony cases involving child victims and witnesses including sexual assault and homicide cases. Before joining the Child Abuse Unit, Ragan worked in the Sexual Assault Unit where she prosecuted sexual assault cases with victims over the age of 16.

The Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Units are part of the larger Special Victims Unit which also involve cases of Elder Abuse and Domestic Violence.  Working in the Special Victims Unit has shown Ragan the importance of victim-centered prosecution, which is where the victim's input is sought and the criminal case is handled aligned with that input.  As Livingston County Prosecutor, Ragan will institute a victim-centered approach to the prosecution of all assaultive cases including domestic violence and sexual assault cases.

Before joining the Special Victims Unit, Ragan was the assistant prosecutor assigned to the Taylor, Woodhaven, Inkster, Southgate and Wyandotte District Courts. Working in the district courts showed Ragan importance of involving the local community in the prosecution of cases.  As Livingston County Prosecutor, Ragan will make community input a priority.

In addition to the above policies, Ragan would adopt the following initiatives as Livingston County Prosecutor:

  •  Seeking alternatives to incarceration for first-time offenders and less serious non-assaultive crimes as well as for individuals with drug, alcohol, or mental health problems where treatment is a more appropriate alternative, and for veterans of a branch of the U.S. armed forces.
  •  Addressing conflicts of interest within the Prosecutor's Office so that cases are handled without bias by or for the prosecution or the defense, and to avoid even the appearance of impartiality.
  •  Holding corporations that pollute Livingston County waterways accountable for their actions in order to protect the quality of life, recreational opportunities and water supplies of county residents and visitors.
  •  Making sure that justice is blind to the color, race, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity and/or sexual orientation of the litigants, and prosecuting any who commits a crime that targets another person's color, race, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity and/or sexual orientation to the fullest extent of the law.
